School Council -
WHAT IS A SCHOOL COUNCIL?
All
government schools in Victoria have a School Council. They are
legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key directions
of a school within centrally provided guidelines. A School Council is
able to directly influence the quality of education that the school
provides for its students.
School council sets the vision, determines priorities and ensures the school is responsive to the needs of the local community.
There are three possible categories of membership.
A mandated elected parent category. More than one third of the total members must be from this category.
A mandated elected Department of Education employee category. No more
than one third of the total membership must be from this category.
An optional member category. A member can be co-opted by a decision of
School Council because of their special skills, interests or
experiences.
The term of office of members is two years. Half the members must
retire each year and this creates vacancies for the annual School
Council elections.
There must be at least 8 meetings during the year.
Why is parent membership so important?
Parents on school councils can provide important viewpoints and
have valuable skills that can shape the direction of the school.
Those parents who become active on a school council find their
involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children
feel a greater sense of belonging.
You do not need special experience to be on school council, only an
interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership
with others to help shape the school’s future.

The Parents Committee is a sub-committee of the School Council. At Warranwood PS we strive to build a strong relationship between home and school to maximise learning opportunities. The involvement of parents leads to a greater understanding of the school organization and programs, as well as building closer relationships with teachers, other parents and your child’s classmates.
Depending on time commitments, skills and interests, there are many
ways parents can contribute at school; such as being on School Council,
being a Classroom Helper or being on the Parents’ Association.
Parents Association Aims:
- Promote a sense of school community through social activities;
- Fund raising to support school programs;
- Provide a forum for communication amongst members of the school community;
- Liaise with the school council and identify areas in need of funding not provided for within the budgetary limits of the school;
- Set strategies and priorities to achieve fundraising objectives; and
- Support our teaching staff in the pursuit of improved educational resources, facilities and school environment.
Membership
- Membership is open to any parent or guardian of a child attending Warranwood PS
- Membership entitles you to vote on matters discussed at meetings, which are held monthly. Dates and details are published in the school newsletter.

Helping at Warranwood -
There are lots of ways of helping at Warranwood Primary School. Programs are enhanced by the participation of parents and other community members.
BRIDGING THE GAP
Our school uses Bridging
the Gap volunteers to help Senior School students with their literacy
skills. It involves working through a planned program, one to one, with
a student for approximately one hour each week. You may wish to
volunteer for a term or longer. We are grateful for all assistance.
Many of our volunteers are grandparents or parents of past or present students.
If you, or someone you know, can help with this program please contact the School Office (9876 6066) for more details.
DEVELOPING LITERACY PARTNERSHIPS
Warranwood Primary School offers ‘Parents Helping With Literacy’,
a program designed to assist parents with knowledge of aspects of
Literacy – Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. The information
gained throughout the sessions will assist the parents in not only
classroom help but also as a good background knowledge of these areas
to use with their children at home. It enables parents to be aware of
how children learn and areas of difficulty the children may face.
The Program runs early in the year one night a week for four weeks.
INTERSCHOOL SPORT
Warranwood Primary School participates in the Ringwood District Sports Association inter-school competition. Students are encouraged to learn skills of major games and co-operate in a team when representing the school in the Summer and Winter teams’ competition. Sports include netball, football, soccer, cricket, basketball, softball, bat-tennis and volleyball. Successful teams in their division have the opportunity to extend themselves in the wider metropolitan finals that determine the State Champions. Parent support is vital to this program. if you are interested in assisting as a team coach, manager or umpire please let the school office know.
