Numeracy

At Warranwood Primary School, we are committed to delivering a dynamic, evidence-based approach to mathematics learning that is consistent across the school and aligned with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0.

Our goal is for every student to become a confident, capable and adaptive user of mathematics.

All students participate in a dedicated daily Mathematics session, integrating:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Measurement
  • Space
  • Statistics
  • Probability

Our Mathematics lessons include:

  • Explicit whole-class instruction
  • Guided practice
  • Targeted small group teaching
  • Independent application
  • Reflection and review

Explicit mathematics teaching — where concepts, skills and procedures are systematically broken down, modelled and practised — significantly improves student achievement, confidence and engagement. This structured approach:

  • Builds deep conceptual understanding
  • Strengthens procedural fluency
  • Develops mathematical reasoning
  • Supports problem-solving skills
  • Promotes equity and success for all learners

Our Mathematics Framework

Across all year levels, students develop proficiency in:

  • Understanding
  • Fluency
  • Reasoning
  • Problem-Solving

These proficiencies are embedded across all six strands of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and support students to think critically, communicate mathematically and apply their learning in real-world contexts.

Understanding

Students build strong conceptual knowledge by connecting ideas, representing concepts in multiple ways and explaining why mathematical processes work.

Fluency

Students develop accuracy, efficiency and flexibility in choosing and applying strategies. Fluency means more than speed — it reflects confident recall, efficient computation and strategic thinking.

Reasoning

Students justify their thinking, compare strategies, make logical inferences and explain their solutions using mathematical language.

Problem-Solving

Students apply mathematics to unfamiliar situations, investigate real-world problems and reflect on the reasonableness of their solutions.

Number Fluency

Number fluency is embedded across all year levels and is explicitly practised throughout the week.

Students develop:

  • Automatic recall of number facts
  • Flexible mental computation strategies
  • Efficient written methods
  • Estimation skills
  • Strategy selection and comparison

Prep – Year 2

In the early years, students develop strong foundations in number sense, place value and mathematical language.

Instruction focuses on:

  • Counting and number relationships
  • Addition and subtraction strategies
  • Place value understanding
  • Measurement concepts
  • Spatial awareness
  • Early data representation

Concrete materials, visual models and explicit modelling support students to build deep conceptual understanding alongside procedural skill.

Targeted support and extension opportunities ensure:

  • Students requiring additional scaffolds are supported
  • Confident mathematicians are challenged and extended

Years 3–6

As students progress, they build increasingly sophisticated understanding across all strands.

Instruction focuses on:

  • Efficient computation strategies
  • Fractions and decimals
  • Multiplication and division concepts
  • Algebraic thinking
  • Measurement and geometry
  • Statistical investigation
  • Probability experiments and simulations

Students are explicitly taught to:

  • Explain and justify strategies
  • Compare the efficiency of different methods
  • Model real-world situations mathematically
  • Use digital tools appropriately
  • Reflect on and evaluate solutions

This ensures students transition from learning basic procedures to thinking flexibly and applying mathematics with confidence.

Supporting Every Learner

Mathematics at Warranwood is inclusive, structured and responsive.

We provide:

  • Explicit, structured teaching
  • Differentiated tasks
  • Small group instruction
  • Intervention support where required
  • Extension and enrichment opportunities

Our consistent instructional model ensures clarity, reduces cognitive overload and enables every student to experience growth and success.

At Warranwood Primary School, mathematics is more than numbers — it is about thinking, reasoning and making sense of the world. Through explicit instruction, structured practice and meaningful application, we ensure every student develops the skills, confidence and mindset to thrive.
